The Sykes- Picot agreement between the French and British in 1919 cut up West Asia, the region we call the Middle East, into the present-day nation-states.  Borders were drawn with no regard to the ethnic communities that inhabit that region. Kurdistan, a tapestry, that has been cut into 4 different regions that are currently occupied by Iraq, Syria, Iran and Turkey. The occupation and division of Kurdistan has led to genocide, ethnic cleansing, and other state sanctioned violence which in turn produced anti state resistance movements.
